LOS ANGELES, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 7/23/2017 – When Audrina Patridge first came onto the scene, it was of course in the MTV reality series, The Hills. Since then, she has launched a career in film, television and most recently, fashion, as the creator and designer of Prey Swim. We caught up with Audrina at Simply LA, the fashion and beauty conference that took place in Los Angeles on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Read here for our complete coverage of the day’s events.

I know that you are a new mom but speaking strictly about work, what is your passion?

“Well I love the entertainment industry. I love hosting, I love entertaining and being on camera. But it’s not consistent. Now that I have a baby and a family, I feel like I need something a little more consistent. So my second passion is swimwear, that lifestyle of being around the water. So I really wanted to focus on that and really give it a go and it’s been doing really well.”

What fashion trends are you really loving right now?

“For swim and in general, I love the high-waisted. I love high-waisted jeans, I love high-waisted bathing suits. In our next two collections which we’re showing in Miami, there’s a lot of high-waisted and one pieces. I love pieces that transition from day to night so you can change up the look. Whether it’s with a hat, accessories, heels, you can throw on jeans over them and it changes the whole look. (Editor’s note: The Prey Swim collection which included looks from Resort 2018, was shown at Miami Swim Week on Friday, July 21.)

Ok now switching gears, I happened to hear you mention that your family is vegan.

“Yes, my dad and my sisters.”

Is this something that you’re considering for yourself as well?

“Yeah…. I’m teeter- tottering. I see them and they are so particular in what they order and what they eat. I’m slowly getting there but I love steak and I love chicken. It’s easier to eat when you can eat everything. Being a vegan you have to be very disciplined and eat at home a lot. I’m on the go so it’s a little harder for me.”

What about vegan beauty products? Do you actively seek them out?

“You know, I recently just started getting more and more into vegan cosmetics. So yes, I’m really aware of the different brands. I love Tata Harper. She’s one of my favorites. All that is organic, anything that’s from the earth and not chemically made, I love. If there’s anything on the back of the product box, that I can’t pronounce, then I’m kind of turning those products down now unless it’s something that I absolutely have to have. But yes, I am starting to turn more and more towards vegan products.”

LOS ANGELES, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 7/19/2017 -“Ulla makes beautiful sundresses that caters to making someone feel chic and beautiful,” says actress, human rights activist and SIMPLY LA keynote speaker Ashley Green during our interview. “It’s the first time that I actually wore this designer and when I put it on I loved it, I felt good in it and that’s the most important thing, I think. I felt like it was highly appropriate for this event because for me, you should feel beautiful and comfortable in your own skin.”

Ashley Greene in a design by Ulla Johnson at SIMPLY LA

Feeling beautiful and comfortable in your own skin was clearly the goal of Simply LA, Powered by Nylon. This fashion and beauty conference was held at The Grove in West Hollywood on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Attendees were treated to panels staffed by acclaimed industry notables such as fashion designer Michael Costello, NYX Cosmetics founder Toni Ko, Actress and resort wear designer Audrina Patridge, Actress Logan Browning, (Dear White People) celebrity stylist Daniel Musto, Olympian Nastia Liukin and many more.

Undeniably, Greene has left a lasting impression on global audiences in her role as Alice Cullen in the Twilight series. She will soon be seen in the upcoming film Antiquities, co-starring Academy Award winner, Mary Steenburgen. The actress reflected on the mindset and personal sacrifice it took for her to make her dream a reality.

“If you’re going to do this, believe in yourself wholeheartedly. I came out here and maybe I would have a ‘Lean Cuisine’ day because that’s what I could afford, but then I would put the money into acting classes. If you’re going to pursue this you have to understand that there are sacrifices to be made and it will never be easy, but when you do work, it’s totally worth it. You’ve got to believe in yourself and what you truly feel will make you happy, and then chase after that. Having a ‘what if ‘ is one of the most devastating things, so is going back and thinking, ‘I should have, I would have, I could have’, just do it.”

While Greene’s passion for her craft is crystal clear, so is her commitment to human rights. Specifically, the tragedy that is human trafficking. Greene has served as an ambassador for A21, an organization founded by Christian Elliot, dedicated to ending human trafficking and slavery.

“There are millions of charities and I didn’t want to say that I was going to do anything that I didn’t feel that I was going to give enough time to. It’s a beautiful thing to be a part of this movement because it’s a devastating reality how huge trafficking is, not just overseas but here in the US.”

Greene has traveled with A21 to Thailand and has seen first hand the effects of human trafficking. She notes that barriers exist in combatting human trafficking due to the lack of awareness of the problem and the mere fact that unlike other philanthropic causes, this one can prove difficult to even discuss.

“The first thing is to make sure people are aware of it because people are unaware of it even in their own back yards, it’s very prevalent. And then figure out not only how to prosecute but then combat it and show people the signs of a person who is being trafficked. This is a very taboo subject. A lot of people don’t necessarily want to talk about it, but it’s something that needs to be brought to the forefront. Ideally, we’ll get a curriculum into school systems, the same way that you have Sex Ed. I think that’s the best way to combat it, and then also create resources for people who have already been through this to try and rehabilitate them because it’s a long journey.”

“Acting is such a passion for me, it’s something I couldn’t be without…but being able to help other people, as a human, it means so much.”

While attendees had the chance to get up close and personal with some of their favorite stars, they also had the chance to indulge in exclusive beauty treatments such as the Kate Summerville Oxygen Facial. The company’s account executive Cesar Delgado explained what makes their oxygen facial so effective. “This is a medical grade oxygen and what the oxygen does is it’s going to kill bacteria. It’s going to bring more circulation to the surface and it’s going to infuse the hyaluronic serum that we have added.”

Cesar Delgado of Kate Summerville applies an oxygen treatment facial.

Celebrity stylist Daniel Musto counts Paula Abdul and Karina Smirnoff among his clients. Musto appeared at Simply LA in partnership with Just Fab, to share his expertise on how to streamline and organize your closet.

“The key to a good closet is to make sure that you treat it with care when you set your day up. I actually have a friend in the military and in the military they tell you, ‘Make your bed every morning as respect for your day so when you come home, it respects you back.’

“Think of LA as your vacation destination, not your home. So if LA is a vacation for you and you’re packing for it, what would you bring from your closet if you were to vacation in LA? You have a suitcase the size of your closet. Treat your closet like that suitcase as you’re filling it up for your life, and you’ll be able to get rid of things so easily.”

Celebrity Stylist Daniel Musto speaks onstage during SIMPLY Los Angeles Fashion + Beauty Conference Powered By NYLON

Between the guest speakers as well as the brands and their founders who were in attendance (Chaz Dean for WEN Hair and Body Care and Jhoanna Marisa for Lily + Jasper among many others) Simply LA managed to cover all the bases for those who attended this event.

As Simply LA founder Sarah Boyd stated, “I wanted to create an environment where people could come, get connections, get inspired and really learn from the experts in the industry. So really, they could come and today is like a toolkit that they can take and go after their dreams and do what they love and really make their dream career a reality.”

Los Angeles, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 8/24/2016 – “Just appreciate your emotions and everything you have in every moment in your life because some aliens out there don’t have any emotions,” says Laura Sanchez, in her award winning video that captured the top prize at the Fifth Annual NYX FACE Awards with its science fiction theme.

Thousands of makeup artistry tutorials were submitted to the contest which commenced on April 4th of this year. Several elimination rounds followed leading up to the final night of competition, which was hosted by YouTube beauty maven Kandee Johnson, emceed by 2012 winner Charisma Star and held at The Novo LA LIVE in downtown Los Angeles on August 20th, 2016. Sanchez’s video earned her the title of Beauty Vlogger of the Year as well as $50,000 and a year’s supply of NYX makeup.

Admitting that when her name was announced as the winner of the 2016 NYX FACE Awards she was so stunned a few seconds were needed to process the news, Sanchez found the victory especially meaningful for personal reasons. “I don’t know…when I heard them call my name I was like, ‘Wait, is that me?’ I feel so happy and today was my great grandfather’s birthday and he died not too long ago so I was like, ‘Oh my God, this is for him!’

We caught up with the acclaimed attendees of the this event on the red carpet and at the after party to discover, among other things, their definition of beauty.

How do you define beauty?

Megan McIntyre

“I think beauty for me being a beauty editor is about how you define yourself. It really is an expression of who you are. This is your style, this is your lifestyle choices, that shows what’s important to you what it is that you think you want the world to see about you. And that could be, I want to go natural today and I want everybody to see just how awesome I feel about myself, you know what, I really want to rock that cat eye, and I think it’s just something that you’ve got to own. You’ve got to have that confidence and if you don’t have that confidence, sometimes makeup or hair or one of those things can make you feel better and I think that’s a really powerful thing.”

(L.-R.)

Larla Lee

“Well, I just think it’s so funny because you see someone at first and you may see their outside shell and be like, ‘they’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen’ and then you meet them and their attitude is a little bit rotten so then they’re not so pretty to you anymore. I think real beauty is defined whenever you really meet someone and through the kindness of their heart you’ll start seeing them as a really beautiful person.”

Christine Dominique

“Beauty starts from the inside and then out. You can only just enhance it.”

Kandee Johnson

“I think beauty is something more that you feel than something more that you wear. And when you shine that beauty from your heart, it doesn’t matter how perfect your face is, when you make people feel beautiful, I think that’s truly a beautiful person that makes you feel loved..that’s beauty that you feel in your heart.”

Halle Bailey

“I definitely define beauty as being something and somebody so wonderful on the inside first and once it starts within I think it will come out so naturally.”

Chloe Bailey

“It’s all about your confidence and how you strut whatever you have and that’s definitely the most beautiful thing you can ever have.”

Going back to when you made your first video what is the one thing that you know now that you wished you had known then?

RawBeautyKrysti

“That’s a tough one. I would say, I wish I could have enjoyed the ride. I’m a stress case. Oh I’m a stress case! I wish that I could have calmed down a little bit, enjoyed the ride. Honestly, I’ve learned to just do my best and not take things too seriously. It’s been an amazing couple years.”

Alex Poletti

“The best you can be is being you. As long as you don’t stray from who you are in your videos. It is the best that you can be.”

Pompberry

“I’d say, following up on that just follow your instincts and your gut feeling. Just be creative. Don’t be afraid to think outside the box. Definitely don’t be afraid to get out of your comfort zone.”

Brianna Fox

“I think definitely, living in the moment because it goes by so fast and just enjoy it while it happens. Like Krysti, I stress out too. We all stress out. Go with the flow and enjoy every minute of it.”

CosmobyHaley

“Seriously, don’t stress too much and enjoy the ride because this is like a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Kandee Johnson

I don’t know what I wish I would have known because I think learning things was part of the journey. Those are invaluable things that you can’t get without stumbling along the way. I guess I wasn’t afraid back then but I would tell other people to not be afraid. Start with what you have, where you’re at….good camera, good lighting and then do it! Start whatever you want to do now, where you are. Don’t wait for a perfect time.

If you could collaborate with anyone in the studio who would it be?

Chloe

“I would say Frank Ocean and Andre 3000.”

Hailey

“Definitely our mentor Beyoncé. Frank Ocean we love and I also love Lenny Kravitz.”

How did you get your start and why did you decide to do what you’re doing?

Larla Lee

“So I got my start when I was living back in Alabama and I started watching other girls on YouTube and I was like, ‘I could totally do that!’ It definitely took a lot of courage to actually put myself out there on the Internet because there’s a lot of criticism out there. But, it’s a lot scarier in your head than what it actually is.”
