HOLLYWOOD, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 8/9/2023 – The Academy Awards announced their requirements for competition in next year’s Short Film categories including Live Action, Animated and Documentary. Any short film may be submitted in consideration for a nomination if it has won a qualifying award at one of a number of competitive film festivals such as the HollyShorts Film Festival.
For any movie to win an award at the HollyShorts Film Festival, the filmmakers first have to win over the jury. And the 19th annual HollyShorts Film Festival’s esteemed jury is as follows: Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years A Slave), Sam Worthington (Avatar), Zoey Deutch (Not Okay), Alexandra Shipp (Barbie), Josh Whitehouse (Daisy Jones & the Six), Christina Chong (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds), Run the Burbs showrunner, Nelu Handa, Academy Award Winner Jaimie Ray Newman (Skin), Tom Berkley and Ross White, 2023 Oscar winners for An Irish Goodbye, Aneil Karia, 2022 Oscar winner for The Long Goodbye, 2023 Oscar nominee Pamela Ribbon (My Year of Dicks), Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis (The Flying Sailor).
Returning for jury duty this year is double Oscar winner Joanna Quinn (Affairs of the Art), Academy Award winner Alice Doyard (Colette), and 2023 Academy Award nominee Joshua Seftel (Stranger at the Gate).
Media members of the jury will include Variety international correspondent K.J. Yossman and Eric Kohn, Executive Editor and Chief Critic of IndieWire.
The jury will be responsible for determining all HollyShorts winners, including the ones that will qualify for next year’s Academy Awards. This year’s film festival will screen 402 films of which 180 are from female filmmakers and 120 are from BIPOC filmmakers.
This year’s hybrid celebration of short films will take place in-person with screenings at the TCL Chinese Theaters in Hollywood and virtually through the official festival streaming platform, BITPIX.
HollyShorts screenings will take place from August 10 – 20 at the TCL Chinese Theaters, 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, CA 90028 followed by the awards gala on August 20th.
This year marks the 19th anniversary of HollyShorts.
