MERYL STREEP TO PRESENT NICOLE KIDMAN WITH THE 49th ANNUAL AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

LOS ANGELES, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 4/24/2024 -“Nicole Kidman embodies the glamour and romance of Hollywood past-a true screen icon-but she is also a risk taker-and so each performance is something new and something profound,” says AFI President and CEO, Bob Gazzale. “And like all truly great artists-Nicole not only gives back-she drives culture forward with her commitment to amplifying the voices of female directors and producers.”

Kidman will receive the 49th AFI Life Achievement Award on April 29th, 2024. Presenting the award to Kidman will be three-time Oscar winner, actress Meryl Streep.

The Gala Tribute will take place at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood. Actors Morgan Freeman, Reece Witherspoon and Naomi Watts will also be onstage to honor Kidman’s work on the silver screen. The official dinner sponsor is Canva, the official water sponsor is Fiji and the official red-carpet sponsor is AMC Theatres. All proceeds from the AFI Life Achievement Award support the American Film Institute as a non-profit organization.

Audiences first took notice of Kidman back in 1989 with her powerful performance in the suspense thriller, Dead Calm. Since then, she has gone on to win an Oscar for Best Actress in a Leading Role for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf in The Hours.

Performances by Kidman have left their impact on indie films (Dogville, directed by Lars Von Trier, To Die For, directed by Gus Van Sant) and studio films (Batman Forever, directed by Tim Burton, Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann).

Kidman’s acting career highlights include rave reviews for her work in theater. In 1998, her stage debut in David Hare’s The Blue Room, earned Kidman both London’s Evening Standard Award for Best Actress and an Olivier Award Best Actress nomination.

Kidman’s most recent projects include Expats (2024), Special Ops:  Lioness (2023), and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023). Upcoming projects include Mimi Cave’s Holland, Michigan, Richard LaGravanese’s A Family Affair, and Season Two of Nine Perfect Strangers.

Philanthropy plays a starring role in Kidman’s life. For nearly two decades she has served as Goodwill Ambassador for UN women. Along with husband Keith Urban, she has helped to raise millions over the years for the Stanford Women’s Cancer Program, a world re-nowned center for research into the causes, treatment, prevention, and eventual cure of women’s cancer. Kidman’s mother Janelle is herself a breast cancer survivor.

The 49th Life Achievement Award Honoree joins a stellar group of individuals who have elevated motion picture to an art form including John Ford (1973), Orson Welles (1975), Bette Davis (1977), Jane Fonda (2014) and more.

The 49th AFI LIFE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD:  A TRIBUTE TO NICOLE KIDMAN, will premiere on TNT on June 17 at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT and on Turner Classic Movies (TCM) on June 27 at 8:00 p.m ET/PT. This will be the ninth year the Emmy-winning AFI Life Achievement Award Special will air on TNT.
