LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA 6/29/2023 (LA ELEMENTS) – “I remember when we finished it,” says Luke Spiller lead singer and songwriter for The Struts, “I was outside having a cig with Ads (guitarist Adam Slack), and I was like, ’Is this any good? …I mean, it’s alright’. And that’s the funny thing with some of these singles. My hands were up in the air, like, ‘It’s a great song, but I don’t know.”

The track in question was “Could Have Been Me” from The Struts debut album, “Everybody Wants.” The response to the track was so overwhelming that The Struts were catapulted from UK club favorites to global rock stars.

Spiller is the featured artist in the latest episode of the BMI signature series, How I Wrote That Song®, presented by BMI, Beasley Media Group, and Xperi’s HD Radio Technology. He explained to Radio Sara that he never would have predicted that “Could Have Been Me” would have been the song that would end up changing everything for the band. “It ended up not only being a big hit, but the song that keeps on giving.” High-profile placement in sporting events, commercials and movies have exposed the band to new audiences.

Although Spiller has co-written a number of hits for The Struts throughout their career, (“Kiss This,” “Body Talks”) he’s still never quite certain how well a song will resonate with others. “You might not even recognize the quality within it, until you really start to show it around and people react to it and get drawn into that.”
