HOLLYWOOD, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 3/30/2016 – Day three of Art Heart’s Fashion was the place to be if you wanted to see designs that were glamorous, elegant, sultry even, as Walter Mendez presented his collection for Fall/Winter 2016.  Held on March 16 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, assembled guests were  treated to a show that impressed.

Incorporating  silhouettes that flattered the female form to perfection, the statuesque models in Mendez’s show glided down the runway in gowns sporting regal trumpet trains, alluring mermaid trains and evening attire with capes and the occasional high-low hems here and there. Embellishments such as crystal beading and lace were utilized to enhance the designs beautifully without going over the top. All of these fashion elements, along with a Spanish flair that seemed to flow through much of this line, came together to make for one of the more memorable shows during any LA Fashion Week.

And if all of that wasn’t enough, Mendez presented a collection within a collection that earned an overwhelming standing ovation from the assembled crowd. One that marks a collaboration with business partner Ryan Patros.  That particular collection will be the focus of a future report.

We spoke with Mendez on the red carpet after his show and gained insight into the philosophy of a man who although still in his twenties, creates designs that are already being worn by some of the biggest names in entertainment such as Jennifer Lopez, Selena Gomez just to name a few.

Have you always wanted to be a fashion designer?

The real answer is no because I didn’t realize what design was. Growing up to me it was just sort of like, ‘I like fashion’ well, everybody likes fashion so it was almost like second nature to me. It wasn’t until I discovered a sewing machine that it all came together.

I know you graduated from Cal State Long Beach, as did Phillip Lim. What is it about that university that is turning out such acclaimed designers?

Cal State Long Beach has a great design program and I’m really proud to be an alumnus from there. I just have to say, that not only do they have a good program but what is also important is dedication and work.

You’ve dressed so many famous ladies, who would be on your list to dress whom you haven’t dressed yet?

That’s a tough one. There are multiple celebrities that we would love to dress! (after a quick consult with business partner Ryan Patros the answer is revealed) Beyonce and Shakira.

For someone who is just starting out in fashion, what advice would you give them in terms of how important it is to be formally educated in fashion?

Well, it’s always very tricky when you speak in terms of formally educated because a lot of people just have it. Having technical training does help you but like anything in life, it’s all about experience and for anybody starting out, I would have to say, get out there. Do an internship. Start working on your collection. No matter how fast you’re moving, as long as you don’t stop moving, then you’ll get exactly where you want to be.

We really enjoyed the show. Thank you for your time.

Thank you for attending.
