BEVERLY HILLS, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 5/10/2016 -Although the process of washing and blow drying a client’s hair before a cut and style is the norm, utilizing the freestyle dry cut method is what Mika Fowler prefers. As the name suggests, hair is cut only when completely dry. Fowler’s expertise of this innovative technique, has won her an elite clientele that includes such stars as Olivia Munn, Emma Roberts and Rosario Dawson just to name a few. We caught up with the master stylist at the acclaimed Kim Vo Salon located inside the five star Montage Hotel to find out more about her philosophy on cutting and styling and to see if she could shed some light into the age old dilemma: How to maintain the amazing look you get at a salon when your stylist is not around.

What attracted you to the “dry cut method?”

“The reason why I started to do the dry haircut is because even if you really position your hair, part it to a certain place, your hair never “listens” to you. Your hair has its own way to go. So if a style is too complicated, you can’t really enjoy the style as long as you would like. As a stylist, I analyze my client’s hair and I work with the way the hair naturally wants to go. I don’t fight it.

And it’s easier to see which way the hair naturally wants to go when it’s dry?

“Yes. When your hair is wet, all of the volume doesn’t really show. Your hair becomes heavier because it’s wet. When your hair is dry, and usually you wear your hair dry, I can see how your hair actually grows and then I cut.”

What is the one thing that women do with their hair that you wish they wouldn’t?

“I think that anything that makes you happy, you should try, but you have material in that you have a type of hair, a type of bone structure, face shape, so if you want to try something, you really have to see what you have and embrace the full package. Some people, when they look at themselves, really don’t see the image, they just see part by part and that is why they will have a problem.

Hair extensions have been popular for a while but lately they have been getting a bad rap in terms of the potential damage they can do to hair. What are your thoughts on this?

If you wear extensions, some people’s hair will be strong enough to hold that, but some people’s hair will be too fine. If that is the case, maybe it’s better to wear clip-ons so you can enjoy the look for only that night but not like all of the time.

So with any style it’s very much the approach that matters.

There’s always a way to enjoy a style as the fashion that you want but you need to find the best way how. That’s why you will need professional help because sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got to work with.

What advice would you give to someone who is just starting out who hopes to one day be a master stylist such as yourself?

I’m not a multi-task person and I don’t really trust a multi-task hairdresser. I would say to someone who is just starting out to see what kind of work gives you passion and master that.
