LOS ANGELES, CA (LAELEMENTS) 8/10/2018 – If it’s the brands that make the beauty festivals, then this year’s Ipsy Gen Beauty really scored with Pūrlisse. We attended the wildly popular beauty event when it came to LA on March 24th and 25th at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Throughout the fun craziness of the day, we were introduced to a multitude of emerging and established beauty brands of which Pūrlisse was a clear standout. We were lucky enough to be gifted with two exceptional products from this skincare line. A line that is based here in LA, but with the undeniable influence of the Far East. The company’s official website describes Pūrlisse as being “a culmination of Asian wisdom and modern philosophy.”

CHARCOAL + LICORICE Pore Refining Sheet Mask and BLUE LOTUS Essential Daily Moisturizer by Pūrlisse

We are loving our CHARCOAL + LICORICE Pore Refining Sheet Mask and BLUE LOTUS Essential Daily Moisturizer.

Sunscreen is a must especially during one of the hottest summers on record. Pūrlisse Blue Lotus Essential Daily Moisturizer to the rescue! If powerful protection from the sun (SPF 30) without risking a breakout and anti-oxidant/anti-inflammatory action is what you are looking for, then put this on your list. Another must-have for a flawless complexion is the Pūrlisse CHARCOAL + LICORICE Pore Refining Sheet Mask. Amazing scent and it cools and refreshes while minimizing your pores too.  We loved how these products worked their magic on our skin so we reached out to Pūrlisse founder and CEO Jennifer Yen to tell us more about her skincare line.

On your website, you state that you created Pūrlisse to “share the beauty and spirit” of your heritage. Would you please elaborate?

“I built Pūrlisse around my grandmother’s most important beauty secret – BLUE LOTUS. She would brew the lotus leaves with tea and sauté the seeds with vegetables for us to eat. She’d also steam and sauté the lotus root with sesame seeds, which is very detoxifying. Our first collection is based on the blue lotus which carries a lot of symbolism in Asian culture. It is full of antioxidants while calming the skin, boosting radiance and detoxifying.”

Why did you select the name Pūrlisse for your company? What is its significance?

Pūrlisse roughly means smooth and soft in French.

Tell us about the ingredients that you use in your skincare products. I understand that they are generally, paraben free. What else would you like us to know about what goes into your skincare line? Are any of your products vegan?

Our products are made for sensitive skin and made without parabens, mineral oil, propylene-glycol, phthalates, GMO’s, sulfates, vegan + cruelty-free.

What do you feel is the number one thing that ages skin the most?

Definitely improper sun care! Not using SPF everyday (especially in this LA heat) is extremely damaging to the skin and it’s so easy to be prevented. We have an SPF 30 moisturizer that is crucial to your makeup routine as it has vitamin E, which prevents premature aging as well.

At what age do you feel that a skincare regimen should begin?

The sooner you can prevent problems and treat the skin, the better! Whether that’s teens or twenties, I think it varies per person and per lifestyle. However, cleansing and moisturizing should be the first step for anyone’s first try at skincare.

What is the biggest mistake that women make with skincare?

Using products that aren’t made for them. Addressing skin types is very important. We have sections on purlisse.com dedicated to each skin type because someone with dry skin might need more attention and thicker products than those with oily skin, etc.

What trend in skincare do you believe is no longer a trend? In other words what “trend” is now here to stay?

Face masks were huge in 2017 as a niche, but once everyone saw the benefits, the market has continued to climb and everyone is still using them like crazy! Letting product soak into the skin for 10-15 minutes has a way better impact versus washing it away after ten seconds.

About what percent of your customers are men?

Seven percent of our consumers are men and we look forward to marketing more towards this booming market in the future to grow this number.

Ok. True confessions time! Is it true that before creating Pūrlisse, you were an actress on The Power Rangers?

I was! I was Vypra and would spend 15 hours a day on set under heavy makeup and it completely ruined my skin along with my confidence, having constant irritated and itchy skin. I developed rosacea, psoriasis, adult acne and hives. My skin couldn’t breathe through the products which resulted in clogged pores and growing bacteria. These problems are what made me start Pūrlisse to finally have clear skin.
