GLENDALE, CA (LA ELEMENTS) 9/14/2019 – It’s an undeniable fact: You’re never too young to start taking care of your skin. If you want your skin to look great later on in life, you’d better start putting in the effort now. With this in mind, Shiseido created WASO, a skincare line for millennials available exclusively at Sephora.  Although aimed especially for the 20’s to 30’s crowd, this skincare line has broad appeal. It is gender inclusive and the natural and cruelty free ingredients found in WASO is for skin types of all ethnicities.

At a special 2 day event that saw renowned chef and wellness guru Sophia Roi as well as Cosmopolitan Magazine joining in the festivities, (Roe was present for day 1 in Glendale) Shiseido presented the Superfood Skincare Food Truck. Anyone visiting the Sephora locations at Glendale or Pasadena, was invited to stop by the truck and quench their thirst with Roi’s concoction of carrot, loquat, yuzu and tonics. They were also given samples of the WASO Clear Mega-Hydrating Cream and received a complimentary WASO Purifying Peel Off Mask facial inside the store.  There were a number of very generous gift with purchase offers: Two full sized selections from the WASO line as well as a branded tote and a bento lunch box, (a $135 value) were gifted to everyone who made a $75 dollar Shiseido purchase. Any in store purchase of a WASO product also came with a gift: A Ginza crossing pouch with Ultimune Deluxe, Urban Oil Free Deluxe and Benefiance Eye Deluxe ($65 value)

WASO is inspired by the Japanese food tradition of Washoku, which emphasizes respect for what is natural and holistic. Here are the products that make up the WASO skincare line:

Beauty Sleeping Mask -The yuzu citrus in this mask, which is high in vitamins A, C and E works overnight to restore moisture to dry skin.

Purifying Peel Off Mask- The botanical power of red shiso cleanses away pollutants without leaving your face feeling dry and tight as some cleansing masks do.

Fresh Jelly Lotion-   What is the secret ingredient to this ultra moisturizing lotion?   The White Jelly Mushroom. One of the best things about the Fresh Jelly Lotion is that it is for all skin types.

Clear Mega-Hydrating Cream -Formulated with whole carrot cells, this cream hydrates without leaving your skin looking shiny. Great for reducing the look of pores too.  Should you wear it under make-up or over?  You decide.

We reached out to Sophia Roe to learn about her outlook on “wellness,” how she came up with the perfect recipe for this WASO event and more.

On what first sparked her interest and how she came to be an authority on  “wellness.”

I don’t actually call myself an authority on anything except being myself, lol.  But I actively work within the wellness industry, and have for more than 7 years now. I came from a background that was in no way healthy. Mentally, or physically. I grew up in a horribly toxic environment as a kid, which ultimately led to having a pretty toxic mindset as a young adult. Luckily, a health scare in my early 20’s was the best thing that ever happened to me because through that experience I learned how to take care of myself, heal, and ultimately start my “well-being” journey.

On why Roe prefers the term “well-being” over “wellness.”

I don’t love the term “wellness,” as now it’s become a term that’s often associated with industry, or buying products. I like to use the term “well-being” as you don’t need to purchase a thing to check in with your “well-being.”  I love a tonic, tincture, green juice, powder, etc just like anybody else does, but to argue that those things are necessary or NEED to be part of your routine in order to be “well”…yeah, I just don’t think that’s true. A wellness/well-being routine can be as simple as waking up early to meditate, giving yourself time to have a good cry, catching up with a friend, sitting down to eat, saying “no” more often, dancing around the house, etc.  Checking with your well-being doesn’t have to cost money, it just needs to be mindful.  Our individual needs are super vast, bio-individuality is REAL!  What works for you may not work best for someone else.  That is why it’s so important to sit, and create your own “wellness/well-being protocol.

On the selection process for the ingredients in her signature tonic for WASO.

The main part of the tonic is directly inspired by the Clear Mega Hydrating Cream, which features the whole carrot cell.  So it was only natural to make this a carrot based drink.  Yuzu is the key ingredient in my favorite product from WASO (The Beauty Sleeping Mask) so naturally, it had to make an appearance in the tonic as well.

Say ahhh: Roe’s flavorful superfood concoction was a great way to beat the summer heat.
